Padstow Harbour

The People: Bringing Padstow Harbour into the 21st Century

Padstow Harbour is much more than a docking point. It serves as a lively center on Cornwall’s beautiful north coast, located in a popular tourist area. This small but strong harbour is not limited to its nearby quays. Its jurisdiction covers the entire Camel estuary. This means it stretches from the bridge in Wadebridge down to Gulland Island, which sits at the tricky mouth of the estuary, famously guarded by the legendary Doom Bar.

The Padstow Harbour Commissioners oversee this complex maritime world. They are the authority responsible for ensuring the safety of all marine users in this area, including professional mariners, local enthusiasts, and curious visitors. Besides safety, they manage the collection of fees for using the harbour. This ensures the harbour can keep operating and be maintained. Their role is crucial, representing the interests of a diverse community on and around the water.

The Problem : Ready for a Digital Refresh

Many organisations eventually reach a similar point. Their digital tools, which were once adequate, begin to feel outdated. For the Padstow Harbour Commissioners, their website had arrived at this stage. A valued team member had managed it internally. Upon retiring, they left behind a system that was difficult to navigate and hard to update. This made even simple tasks frustrating, especially for the Harbour Master, who found it inefficient to use.

The core information was vital. Ensuring safe navigation in the harbour’s approaches is critical, so clear details on channels, mooring, and town facilities were necessary. A large amount of operational information, including fees, needed to be easily visible. A major issue was the quarterly changes to harbour regulations. The old system made these important updates very hard to manage, which created a risk of missing crucial safety information.

In addition to the content for the public, the team needed a simple, user-friendly back-end. It was important that non-technical harbour staff could easily update regulations and other changing information.

The ferry, with its unique operating times affected by the tides and seasons, required a special solution. Ferry operators had to update their specific schedules easily, without unintentionally altering other parts of the site.

Padstow Harbour was looking for a website that not only kept up with their busy operations but also actively served their diverse community, showing their focus on safety and modern service.

The Process: Collaboration and Clarity

Our approach always starts with understanding. For Padstow Harbour, this meant deep dives with the Harbour Master to define essential content and optimize user experience. We believe in true partnership, so weekly on-site meetings were key. This allowed for immediate feedback and iterative changes, ensuring every step aligned with their vision and practical needs.

A crucial challenge was illustrating the harbour’s complex navigation clearly. Traditional maps fell short. We opted for drone footage as the ideal backbone for the site – an investment beyond the initial budget, but one we knew would deliver unparalleled clarity. We captured the entire estuary, transforming the footage into interactive maps with clickable points of interest, stunning time-lapses, and scenic shots. This commitment to finding the right solution, even if unconventional, defined our process.

The Product: A Modern Harbour Hub

The goal was ambitious, and while an Easter launch proved challenging due to the brief’s complexity, our agile approach meant the major aspects of the site were fully operational before the bustling summer season began, with the remaining elements completed by November. This wasn’t just a cosmetic update; it was a complete information restructure with interactive mapping that transformed how users accessed vital details.

Once approved, we provided thorough training, empowering the harbour team to manage new document versions and ongoing updates confidently.

A standout feature is the bespoke solution for the ferry operators. We gave them their own dedicated, secure access point. This means they can easily upload each week’s crossing times, adjusting for tide and seasonal demand, with just one weekly visit to input their data and make any price changes. Crucially, they have no access to other areas of the site, ensuring data integrity. The site is now seamlessly set up to publish ‘today’s operating times’ as well as general weekly schedules, and allows for immediate notification of cancellations due to foul weather.

The outcome? A remarkably user-friendly site for the general public, delivering clarity and efficiency. And, most importantly, the Harbour Master is absolutely delighted with a digital platform that truly brings Padstow Harbour into the 21st century.
